Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why can't I find anyone when I search using Local Search?
Local search uses you iPhone's Bluetooth to search for other iPick U users. Thus there could be a few reasons why you're not finding anyone.
    1. Bluetooth must be turned "On" on your device. Check the top right corner of your iPhone's display. If you don't see the Bluetooth indicator (that's the weird looking "B"), than your Bluetooth is not turned on.
To turn Bluetooth "On", Go to your iPhone's Settings > General Settings > Bluetooth and turn it "On"
    2. You must be within Bluetooth range of another iPick U user. Bluetooth range on the iPhone is 33 feet or less.
    3. There are other iPick U users around you with Bluetooth turned on, but they are not currently using the app. The app must be running on all devices that are within each other's range for one iPhone to detect another through Local Search.
  2. My Bluetooth is turned "Off" from the Settings menu, how am I able to find other devices in my area when I user Local Search?
If you are on the same Wi-Fi network as another iPick U user, you will be able to find them through your Local Search feature, even if Bluetooth is turned off. This feature was designed to work in coffee houses where they provide free Wi-Fi to all their customers.
  3. My friend and I are members of iPick U, why can't I receive the Push Message that he sent me?
There could be a number of reasons you are not getting push notifications.
    1. Make sure Push Notifications are enabled on your iPhone.
You can do this by going to your iPhones Settings > Notifications. If it's "Off", then turn it "On". If it's "On" then click on iPick U and turn "On" - Sounds, Alerts, and Badges.
After performing this step go back to your iPhone's Settings, turn Airplane Mode "On" for 30 seconds, turn it back "Off" again, then go back and restart iPick U.
    2. If you are connected to a Wi-Fi network than you need to have port 5223/TCP unblocked by the Wi-Fi's firewall. If you don't know what that means, please have your network admin check out http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3576. If on the other you don't have a network administrator (your home network). Grab your router's manual and read about port forwarding. For example, we have a Linksys router model WTR54G2 and to forward port 5223 to our iPhone's IP, we performed the following
      • Log into the router by typing 192.168.1.1 using any browser on that network and enter the router's password
(This will only work with a Linksys router)
      • Click on Applications and Gaming
      • Click on Port Range Forward
      • Under Application enter iPick U
      • Under starting port enter 5223
      • Under ending port enter 5223
      • Under protocol you can either choose TCP or Both
      • Under IP address you will need to enter your iPhone's IP address which can be found by going to your iPhone's Settings > Wi-Fi > and clicking the right arrow on the currently connected network (the one with the checkmark next to it)
      • Check the "Enable" checkbox
      • Click Save Settings from the bottom of the screen

After performing these steps you'll need to go back to your iPhone's Settings, turn Airplane Mode "On" for 30 seconds, turn it back "Off" again, then go back and restart iPick U.

      1. After performing all these steps, you're still not able to get Push Messages, don't worry, we have our own servers that will send you your messages on initial start of the iPick U application. Thus you will never miss a message. And can answer back anytime you want.

Note: Option "b" will only need to be performed when using Wi-Fi, if you are on a 3G or the Edge network, this solution will not apply.

  4. When I perform a GPS Search and find many users, why do the pictures take so long to show up?
The iPhone has one antenna that is used by both the data network and the Bluetooth. Thus to have less interference and faster performance, you can turn Bluetooth "Off". But remember, if you turn Bluetooth off you will not find anyone when using Local Search with the exception of being on the same Wi-Fi network(see FAQ #2).
  5. What are these messages [Request to Meet], [Request to Meet Accepted], [Request to Meet Denied] in my Chat screen?
If you find someone using Local Search and click on the "Meet" button, you will both receive a [Meet Request] message in your chat screen. This was designed to handle the following scenario: If you find someone using Local Search and send them a Meet Request, but by that time they had already exited the application, then they will be notified via Push Message that you had sent them a Meet Request.
  6. The app has become laggy and less responsive what should I do?
    1. Restart iPick U
    2. Turn the iPhone off for 30 seconds then turn it back on, then restart iPick U
    3. Check your Recent Conversations and Favorite lists. If you have messages from people that you are not going to respond to, then either
      1. Clear their chat logs or
      2. Delete them from the lists
  7. I'm getting entirely to many push notifications and its bothering me, what do I do?
Go to your iPhone's Settings -> Notifications and click on iPick U. After which turn off Sounds and Alerts. This will prevent the push messages from bothering you. However you can still log into iPick U and check to see who sent you messages in the Recent Conversations screen.
  8. After blocking a user, can I unblock them?
No. Once a user is blocked, they are permanently blocked; you'll need to find some other way of communication with them... at least in version 2.0.
